The difference between homeopathy and Rescue Remedy

What is Bach Rescue Remedy?

The Bach remedies is a method of healing devised by Dr Edward Bach. He was a physician and bacteriologist who discovered the remedies in the 1920s and 1930s.

Rescue Remedy is the best-known brand of Dr Bach's remedies. Rescue Remedy provides support in times of emotional demand. It is generally used when in stressful situations.

The Bach System

There are 38 Bach remedies in the Bach system.

Rescue Remedy is made out of 5 of these remedies. The remedy eases feelings of stress, anxiety, and emotional imbalance.

The five flower essences in Rescue Remedy are:

  1. Rock Rose

  2. Impatiens

  3. Clematis

  4. Star of Bethlehem

  5. Cherry Plum

Each remedy is associated with a basic human emotion.

Dr. Bach believed that healing on an emotional level has knock-on effects on other levels. Healthy emotions and a balanced personality allows the body to be in its own natural state of health.

Dr. Bach found a relationship between the way we feel emotionally and the way we feel physically. Better emotional balance often translates into more physical well-being.

There is no Bach remedy aimed specifically at any physical ailment or condition. The remedies work only on an emotional level.

Similarities between Rescue Remedy and Homeopathy

Rescue Remedy and homeopathy have some similarities. They both have shared philosophical approaches to healing.

  • Philosophical Foundations:

Both Rescue Remedy and homeopathy are based on holistic approaches to health.

They both focus on treating the individual rather than just the symptoms of disease.

  • Natural Ingredients:

Both use natural ingredients.

Rescue Remedy is made from flower essences.

Homeopathic remedies use several natural substances, including plants, minerals, and animal products.

  • Dilution:

The preparation of both involves dilution.

In homeopathy, the original substance (often a plant, mineral, or animal product) is repeatedly diluted in a series of steps.

Bach flower remedies, including Rescue Remedy, involve diluting the flower essences in water and brandy.

  • Energetic Principles:

Both systems embrace "energetic" or "vibrational" healing.

Homeopathy works on the principle that a substance's energy can trigger the body's healing process.

Bach flower remedies operate on the belief that the essence of flowers can help restore emotional balance.

  • Gentleness and Safety:

Both are considered gentle and safe forms of treatment, with minimal risk of side effects.

They are used for people of all ages, including children and the elderly, and are sometimes used for pets as well.

Differences between Rescue Remedy and Homeopathy

Although Rescue Remedy and homeopathy share some similarities, they also have significant differences that distinguish their approaches, philosophies, and practices.

  • Foundational Principles:

  • Rescue Remedy: Rescue Remedy is part of the Bach flower remedies system. It is based on the concept that flower essences can address emotional imbalances.

  • Homeopathy: Homeopathy is based on the principle of "like cures like". A substance causing symptoms in a healthy person can, when highly diluted, treat similar symptoms in an ill person.

  • Ingredients and Preparation:

  • Rescue Remedy: Uses specific combinations of flower essences, diluted in water and preserved in brandy.

  • Homeopathy: Based on plants, minerals, animals, and other sources. These substances undergo serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) to create remedies.

  • Scope of Treatment:

  • Rescue Remedy: Focused on emotional and psychological issues. eg stress, anxiety, and emotional shock.

  • Homeopathy: Focused on a wide range of mental, emotional, and also physical conditions.

  • Formulation and Use:

  • Rescue Remedy: Comes in pre-mixed formulas (drops, sprays, pastilles, creams) that are used for general emotional relief. It is not highly individualised.

  • Homeopathy: Remedies are tailored based on specific symptoms and constitution.

While both homeopathy and Rescue Remedy are both classed as alternative medicine, they have distinct approaches and applications.

Homeopathy is centuries-old and offers a wide range of treatments. In contrast, Rescue Remedy focuses on stress relief through a specific blend of flower essences.
