Homeopathy for Natural Hay Fever Relief

Do you suffer with hay fever?

Hay fever affects so many of us, nearly 13 million people in the UK. Symptoms can be mild to debilitating.

What are the symptoms of hay fever?

Symptoms often worsen when the pollen count is high.

Which of these hay fever symptoms do you have?

  • a blocked or runny nose

  • coughing

  • sneezing

  • itchy eyes or throat

  • headaches

  • blocked sinuses

  • shortness of breath

What months are hay fever season?

The main months for hay fever are usually early Spring or Summer. Different forms of pollen are likely to trigger hay fever on different months:

If you have hay fever:

- between February and September, you are most likely to be allergic to tree pollen

- between May and July, you are most likely to be allergic to grass pollen

- between June to September, you are most likely to be allergic to weed pollen

What medication is used for hay fever?

Many hay fever sufferers use over the counter anti-histamines. Antihistamines can control the condition but they do not cure it.

Antihistamines block the effects of histamine, which is a chemical and also a neurotransmitter.

Histamine is created and released by your immune system to help protect you from infections.

Hay fever is an allergic reaction to pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds. Your immune system releases too much histamine. This can cause inflammation in your lungs, throat, nose, and sinuses.

There are some natural ways in which the symptoms of hay fever can be relieved.

How to alleviate hay fever naturally?

Hay fever symptoms can be relieved by the avoidance of allergic triggers.

Monitor Metoffice pollen forecasts and when the pollen count is high:

1. Consider staying indoors

2. You may want to wear wrap-around sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when outdoors

3. Shower and wash your hair after arriving home and change your clothing

4. Avoid drying washing outside

5. Close doors and windows

6. Vacuum regularly, preferably with a HEPA filter

Which foods are best for hay fever?

There is a link between what you eat and hay fever. Foods rich in quercetin, vitamin C, or beta-carotene can help to block histamine. This will then reduce inflammation.

  • Garlic is a good source of Quercetin, Vitamin C, and Potassium. It fights the release of histamine, reducing hay fever symptoms.

  • Ginger slows down histamine production by reducing IgE levels.

  • Onions are a source of quercetin and Vitamin C, stabilising the production of histamine.

  • Blueberries contain high quantities of Vitamin C and quercetin. This makes them a good anti-inflammatory source.

  • Carrots are high in Vitamins A, C, and K and are good anti-inflammatories. Vitamin A helps to heal inflamed mucus membranes and strengthens the immune system.

  • Oily fish, which is rich in Omega 3, has anti-inflammatory properties.

Which foods to avoid with hay fever?

Eating foods that contain high levels of histamine may intensify your symptoms, and so are best avoided.

  • Chocolate contains high amounts of histamine.

  • Dairy products stimulate the production of mucus. This makes symptoms such as a blocked nose worse.

  • Preserved food products such as vinegar, yogurt, or canned fish are often high in histamines.

  • Wheat can worsen allergic reactions in those who suffer from grass pollen allergies.

  • Refined sugars can trigger the body to release adrenalin, which then releases histamine.
