Do you find Winter difficult? I would like to let you know that you are not alone. The days are short with low light levels and outside it is cold and damp.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common with 1 in 50 people having mood disturbances in the Winter months.
When the weather is bad, it can be hard to step outside, but I bet that once you do, you feel so much better for it. Walk briskly and get the heart rate up slightly. The endorphins must kick in because when you come back home you are likely to be in a happier mood with increased energy.
As well as getting outside every day, there are homeopathic remedies for Seasonal Affective Disorder.
What is Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and what are the symptoms?
SAD is when mood changes with a change in seasons or time of the year. You may start to feel ‘down’ when days get shorter in the Autumn and Winter and then start to feel better in the Spring when the days get longer again. A lot of people who get SAD can't wait for Spring to arrive.
The symptoms of SAD can include:
Low mood
Sluggishness or lack of energy
Finding it hard to concentrate
More prone to physical health problems such as colds or infections
Sleeping more than usual
Over-eating
What causes Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)?
Sunlight controls the molecules that help maintain normal serotonin levels.
Sunlight creates Vitamin D, which is actually a hormone. Certain foods such as oily fish, egg yolks, and mushrooms also contain Vitamin D. Vitamin D activates genes that regulate the immune system and releases serotonin.
If you do not have enough Vitamin D in your diet or enough sunlight, not enough serotonin is made, leading to low mood. An article in Psychology Today discusses the psychological consequences of Vitamin D deficiency.
Negative thoughts and feelings about Winter are common among people with SAD.
How can Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) be treated?
Go outdoors for at least 30 minutes a day
Eat a diet high in Vitamin D
Try a Vitamin D supplement
Try homeopathy for seasonal affective disorder
Homeopathy and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Homeopathy offers a gentle and natural approach to addressing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a condition that affects many individuals as the seasons change.
This holistic form of medicine focuses on stimulating the body's inherent healing processes, through taking highly diluted substances tailored to each person's unique symptoms and overall health.
By considering the emotional and physical aspects of SAD, homeopathy can help alleviate symptoms such as lethargy, low mood, mood swings, and irritability.
Through this individualised treatment, homeopathy aims to restore balance and vitality, helping those affected by SAD to navigate seasonal transitions with greater ease and resilience.
Self-prescribing is not recommended for recurrent SAD. A registered homeopath can comprehensively review your health history to identify the most suitable remedy.
If you want to change the way you feel about the lack of light during the winter months, homeopathy is worth considering.
